Highlights
January 10, 2012 was a beautiful winter afternoon. I spent the day photographing in the foothills of the Blue Mountains near Pendleton, Oregon. As the sunset progressed and the sky became vividly colored, I hiked up a hill to achieve a better composition. My intention was to shoot toward the sun, but I turned for a moment to check out the monotone foothills behind me and literally gasped at what I beheld. The setting sun was painting bright orange highlights along the tops of the hills. I watched with amazement as the highlights formed and intensified along the hilltops as far south as I could see, and then, in an instant, were gone. The resulting image, with an emphasis on the dynamic color and texture of the scene, shares the essence of a moment I found to be both inspiring and energizing. This photograph is printed on 80"x34" canvas and mounted with a floating frame. It is installed where the patient wing intersects with the hallway to emergency services.
